Crystal Palace 2 - Los Angeles Legends 1
The Legends Lose A Heartbreaker

The Los Angeles Legends came out of the gate flying with numerous attacks, corner kicks, and set-pieces. Legends fans were convinced they would get the result. In the 44th minute, the momentum changed when attacking central midfielder, Brian Fakkema,  went down with an injury to his knee. Not sure if he could re-enter the match, the Legends continued to play a man short as it was just before the half. With seconds left on the clock, Crystal Palace scored the 1st goal of the night on a deflection to a back-post volley, the result of a long throw-in into the box.

The LA Legends entered half-time down by 1, but still anxous to create a US Open Cup upset - a PDL team beating a professional USL-2 team. The play remained full-speed with scoring opportunities from both teams. However, in the 59th minute of the match Legends player, Ross Schunk was shown a straight red card and ejected from the match. Schunk was a "Top 20 PDL Scorer" in 2007 and has had 2 goals and 2 assists in 6 matches.

Playing down a man, the Legends tied up the match less than 5 minutes later with a goal from Kevin Gallaugher, assisted by Reid Baker.

The score remained tied 1-1 with minutes left on the clock. Fans were anticipating over-time, when once again, a long throw-in proved deadly. Crystal Palace’s Andrew Marshall launched a throw to Pat Healey who finished his second goal of the evening.

The Open Cup match is only the Legends 2nd loss of the season, and first loss at home in Cougar Stadium. The Legends remain just 3 points out of first in league play. Crystal Palace advances to Round 2 of the US Open Cup. But the LA Legends were not the only PDL team unable to capture an upset. The only true upset of the evening proved to be US Amateur team, Hollywood United beating professional USL-1 team, Portland Timbers 3-2. Legends FC Director of Teams, Alex Bengard plays with Hollywood United, and is also a former Timbers player.
